THE DIRECT ANSWER
Start with a clear business goal. Then use AI to help with one real job. Test the result before you add more.
AI is a tool, not the plan
Saying “we will use AI” is not a business plan. It does not tell us who needs help. It does not name the problem. It does not say what good work looks like.
AI can read, sort, draft, flag, and save work. That can help a good plan. It cannot pick the goal for you.
Start with one clear goal
Ask four short questions. Who do we serve? What do they need? What will we do well? What will we not do?
A flashy demo can still fail. The tool may work, but it may not help with a goal that the team needs to reach.
Name the skill you need
Now name the skill that must get better. A service team may need to spot a late job. A sales team may need to find a fact. An owner may need a clean list of choices.
Do not name a brand or app yet. First name the skill. You may find that a clear rule or a small fix works better than AI.
Put AI in one real task
Pick one task that the team does more than once. Write down what starts it, who owns it, what goes in, what can go wrong, and what done looks like.
Then pick the part AI can help with. It may draft, route, flag, or save work. A person should still own key choices.
Check the proof before you grow
Pick one sign of success before the test starts. You may track time saved, missed steps, clean notes, or work done on time.
Set a date to look at the proof. If the test did not help, fix it or stop it. The goal is not to look smart. The goal is to make the work better.

The four-step AI work test
Use these steps in order. Do not buy a tool until you know the job.

- 02 · SkillWhat must the team do better?Pick one skill, such as finding key facts or sending work to the right person.

- 04 · ProofHow will we know it worked?Pick one measure and a review date. Then keep, fix, pause, or stop the test.
Source note: This is Tim Yslava’s own four-step work test. It is a tool for making choices. It is not a claim about a customer, a product, or a result.
Four takeaways
- Pick the goal before you pick the AI tool.
- Use AI to help with one real task.
- Give each test an owner and clear rules.
- Check the proof before you add more.
